Dry weather favours Colombo, the hill country and south coast; the northeast remains wetter.
A long travel window shaped by two monsoons
November to September is the broad travel window, but the best coast depends on the monsoon. January averages 27°C with 124mm of rain; March reaches 32°C with 88mm. June through August is comparatively dry nationally, averaging 32–57mm monthly. October is the clearest month to avoid for an all-island route, averaging 256mm, while November and December remain wetter transition months.
Where to Go
Colombo supplies contemporary energy; the Cultural Triangle holds the early capitals; Kandy and Hill Country rise inland; the South Coast and southeast bring forts, beaches and wildlife.
Food & Culture
A single route can pair Sigiriya at sunrise, the Kandy–Ella railway, Yala safaris, Galle Fort walks and several quiet days beside the Indian Ocean.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to March suits Colombo, the hills and south coast. May to September is better for the east coast and Cultural Triangle.
Do Indian passport holders need a visa?
Indian passport holders need a tourist ETA before travel. The fee is currently waived, but confirm on Sri Lanka’s official ETA website.
Which languages are commonly spoken?
Sinhala and Tamil are official languages. English is widely understood in hotels, visitor sites and major transport hubs.
Is Sri Lanka safe for travellers?
Most visits are trouble-free. Watch for petty theft, avoid political gatherings, respect swimming warnings and never approach wild elephants.
What clothing should be packed?
Pack light clothing, rain protection and modest temple wear covering shoulders and knees. Add a warm layer for Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
What should travellers do in an emergency?
Call 119 for police, 110 for fire services or 1990 for the Suwa Seriya ambulance service. Tourism assistance is available on 1912.
