Understand Chitwan

The Story of Chitwan

Chitwan changed rapidly after malaria control and the 1954 Rapti Valley Development Project. Tharu homelands, new farming settlements and Nepal’s first national park now meet along the Rapti River.

Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

From forest frontier to settled valley

Before the 1950s, malaria and dense sal forest kept the Rapti Valley thinly settled beyond established Tharu communities. The 1954 Rapti Valley Development Project brought roads, disease control and migrants from Nepal’s hills. Someshwar Gadhi above Madi recalls an older Sen-era frontier near the Indian border.

Fact The Rapti Valley Development Project began in 1954 and reshaped settlement across Chitwan.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Tharu roots and postwar migration

Tharu communities adapted to Chitwan’s malarial lowlands long before the 1950s resettlement schemes. Malaria control drew Bahun, Chhetri, Gurung, Tamang and other hill communities into the valley. Bharatpur consequently grew as an administrative and commercial centre, while Bachhauli and Madi retained visible Tharu houses, festivals and farming customs.

Fact The Tharu Cultural Museum and Research Center in Bachhauli documents local dress, tools and domestic life.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Floodplain food and forest knowledge

Chitwan’s cooking follows the Rapti floodplain rather than Himalayan pasture. Tharu meals use rice, lentils, river fish, mustard greens, ghongi snails and anadi sticky rice; chichar is steamed rice associated with celebrations. Migration after 1954 added hill Nepali dishes, while Sauraha’s lodge economy broadened restaurant menus for safari visitors.

Fact Ghongi, freshwater snails cooked with spices, remains a named Tharu speciality in Chitwan.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Hunting power and village design

Rana and Shah rulers treated Chitwan as a hunting landscape, leaving compounds such as Kasara and King Mahendra’s Diyalo Bangala in Bharatpur. Tharu buildings answered different needs: mud walls moderated lowland heat, while raised storage protected grain. After the park’s 1973 creation, former royal infrastructure shifted toward conservation administration and tourism.

Fact Diyalo Bangala in Bharatpur served as a winter residence for King Mahendra.

Chapter 05 · NATURE

Rivers, grasslands and sal forest

Chitwan National Park, established in 1973, protects sal forest, riverine woodland and tall alluvial grasslands shaped by the Rapti, Reu and Narayani rivers. Seasonal flooding renews grazing habitat for rhinoceros and deer, supporting predators including Bengal tigers. UNESCO recognition in 1984 formalised the park’s global importance.

Fact Nepal’s 2021 census recorded 694 greater one-horned rhinoceroses in Chitwan National Park.

Getting there and how long to stay

three or four nights is what the place is worth — not how long our trips happen to run.

Bharatpur Airport receives short flights from Kathmandu and lies near Narayanghat. By road, Kathmandu traffic follows the Prithvi Highway to Mugling, then turns south for Bharatpur; Pokhara also connects through Mugling. Sauraha is reached through Tadi, while Patihani, Kasara, Meghauli and Madi require onward road transfers.

Getting around

Private cars and lodge jeeps are practical between Bharatpur, Sauraha, Patihani, Kasara and Meghauli. Local buses cover main roads but rarely match safari schedules. E-rickshaws handle short trips around Sauraha and Bharatpur. Entry into Chitwan National Park uses authorised safari vehicles, guides and designated canoe operations.

Who it suits

  • Families with older children Jeep safaris and guided canoe trips provide wildlife encounters without Himalayan trekking or high-altitude acclimatisation.
  • Travellers interested in Tharu culture Bachhauli, Patihani and Madi retain Tharu food, building traditions, farming practices and performance forms.
