Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
An island raised by fire
Flores sits on the Sunda volcanic arc, where the Indo-Australian Plate descends beneath Eurasia. Repeated eruptions raised peaks including Kelimutu and Inerie, while isolation encouraged unusual evolution. At Liang Bua Cave, archaeologists uncovered Homo floresiensis remains in 2003, revealing a small-bodied hominin that survived until roughly 50,000 years ago.
