The 1257 eruption of Mount Samalas reshaped Lombok; later Sasak, Makassarese, Balinese and Dutch rule left distinct religious and architectural layers.

Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

Born from Samalas

Mount Samalas erupted in 1257, collapsing beside present-day Mount Rinjani and creating the Segara Anak caldera. Scientific studies connect its sulphate plume with global cooling recorded in medieval chronicles. Austronesian-speaking communities had already settled Lombok, while the island’s position between Bali and Sumbawa later drew Javanese, Makassarese and Balinese influence.

Fact The 1257 Samalas eruption was among the largest sulphur-rich eruptions of the last 2,000 years.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Sasak Lombok

The Sasak form Lombok’s majority and speak regional varieties of the Sasak language alongside Bahasa Indonesia. Most Sasak are Muslim, while communities around Bayan preserve Wetu Telu traditions combining Islamic practice with ancestral customs. Balinese Hindu communities, established during Karangasem rule, remain especially visible around Mataram and Cakranegara.

Fact Masjid Kuno Bayan Beleq is associated with the early spread of Islam in northern Lombok.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Chilli, Coconut and the Sea

Lombok’s dry hills support maize, peanuts and livestock, while wetter slopes around Tetebatu produce rice and coconut. Maritime trade brought spices and grilling traditions through Makassar, Sumbawa and Bali. Ayam taliwang pairs grilled chicken with chilli sambal, plecing kangkung uses water spinach and tomato, and coastal kitchens serve fish from the Lombok Strait.

Fact Ayam taliwang takes its name from Taliwang in neighbouring Sumbawa, despite its strong association with Mataram.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Mosques, Pavilions and Granaries

Sasak bale houses use bamboo, timber and packed-earth floors, while lumbung granaries stand on raised posts beneath curved thatch. Balinese Karangasem rule introduced brick temple gates and water-palace pavilions around Mataram. Islamic influence produced timber mosques such as Bayan Beleq, linking local building methods with Lombok’s religious transition after the 16th century.

Fact Mayura Water Palace was constructed in 1744 under the Balinese kingdom of Karangasem.

Chapter 05 · NATURE

Volcano, Forest and Reef

Mount Rinjani rises to 3,726 metres above northern Lombok, feeding waterfalls, forests and farms across Senaru and Sembalun. South Lombok has drier headlands and curved bays exposed to Indian Ocean swell. Offshore, Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan sit beside coral reefs used by green and hawksbill turtles.

Fact Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres.

Getting there and how long to stay

Lombok International Airport near Praya receives flights from Jakarta, Bali and selected regional cities. Public ferries link Padang Bai in Bali with Lembar, while fast boats run from Padang Bai and Serangan to Bangsal and the Gili Islands. Bangsal is Lombok’s main harbour for local boats to Gili Air, Meno and Trawangan.

Getting around

Bluebird taxis, Grab and Gojek operate around Mataram, Senggigi, Praya and parts of Kuta Lombok. A hired car with driver is practical for Tetebatu, Senaru and Sembalun. The Gili Islands have no motor vehicles; movement is by foot, bicycle, cidomo cart and local inter-island boat.
