Dry months suit the broadest routes

May to September generally brings drier weather to Bali, Java, Lombok and Flores, although peak crowds rise in July and August. Central Kalimantan remains humid year-round. November to March brings heavier monsoon rain, rougher boat crossings and occasional changes to Komodo or Gili sailing schedules.

Where to Go

Bali, East Java and Yogyakarta anchor classic routes; Central Kalimantan, Komodo And Flores, and Lombok And Gili Islands reward longer journeys by river, boat and road.

Food & Culture

Watch sunrise over Mount Bromo, follow orangutans along the Sekonyer River, snorkel beside Gili reefs and enter Uluwatu Temple as kecak singers gather at dusk.

Babi guling

Bali

Spit-roasted pork is seasoned with turmeric, galangal, lemongrass and other Balinese spices.

Gudeg

Yogyakarta

Young jackfruit is slowly cooked with coconut milk and palm sugar, then served with rice and egg.

Rawon

East Java

Keluak nuts give this Surabaya-associated beef soup its earthy flavour and near-black colour.

Ayam taliwang

Lombok And Gili Islands

Grilled or fried chicken is coated with a hot Lombok sauce of chilli, garlic and shrimp paste.

Ikan kuah asam

Komodo And Flores

Flores-style fish soup balances tamarind, tomato, basil and chilli in a light broth.

Juhu singkah

Central Kalimantan

This Dayak dish cooks young rattan shoots with fish or meat, producing a gently bitter flavour.

  • Use the right hand when giving money, food or documents.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples; wear the supplied sash in Bali.
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and designated prayer spaces.
  • Ask before photographing worshippers, ceremonies or Dayak community activities.
