Understand Chiang Rai

The Story of Chiang Rai

Founded by King Mangrai in 1262, Chiang Rai was Lan Na’s first capital. Burmese rule, Siamese resettlement and cross-border trade later shaped a province distinct from Bangkok and southern Thailand.

Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

From Mangrai’s capital to a border province

King Mangrai founded Chiang Rai in 1262 beside the Kok River, making it an early centre of the Lanna kingdom. Chiang Mai replaced it as Mangrai’s principal capital in 1296, but Chiang Rai retained strategic value on routes linking the Mekong, Myanmar and Yunnan.

Fact The Emerald Buddha was recorded at Wat Phra Kaeo in Chiang Rai after lightning damaged a chedi in 1434.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Highland communities and lowland Lanna life

Tai Yuan traditions shape Chiang Rai’s lowland language, temples and markets, while Akha, Lahu, Hmong, Karen and Yao communities live across the surrounding highlands. The Doi Tung Development Project, established in 1988 under Princess Srinagarindra, shifted local livelihoods toward coffee, horticulture and crafts.

Fact Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park preserves Lanna religious art in Chiang Rai city.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Lanna kitchens shaped by mountain trade

Chiang Rai’s food connects Lanna farms with migration from Yunnan and trade across the Mekong. Khao soi uses wheat noodles and curry, sai ua carries northern herbs, and nam ngiao pairs rice noodles with tomato broth. Around Mae Salong, Chinese settlers introduced tea culture and Yunnanese dishes after the 20th-century upheavals in China.

Fact Doi Mae Salong became associated with Chinese Nationalist settlers arriving in northern Thailand during the 1950s and 1960s.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Lanna forms and contemporary spectacle

Chiang Rai’s architecture reflects successive patrons rather than one period. Wat Phra Kaeo preserves Lanna religious forms linked to the 1434 Emerald Buddha discovery, while artist Chalermchai Kositpipat began rebuilding Wat Rong Khun in 1997. Baan Dam, created by Thawan Duchanee, answers the White Temple’s brightness with dark timber, horns and animal imagery.

Fact Wat Rong Suea Ten’s present blue prayer hall was completed in 2016 to a design by Phuttha Kabkaew.

Chapter 05 · NATURE

Rivers, ridges and the Mekong frontier

The Kok River crosses Chiang Rai before meeting the Mekong near Chiang Saen, connecting the provincial capital with a wider border landscape. Doi Tung rises within the Daen Lao Range, while Phu Chi Fa overlooks valleys toward Laos. Elevation supports tea, coffee and cooler-season gardens rarely associated with Thailand’s southern coasts.

Fact The Mekong forms part of Thailand’s boundary with Laos beside Chiang Saen district.

Getting there and how long to stay

four or five nights is what the place is worth — not how long our trips happen to run.

Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport receives direct flights from Bangkok and selected Thai cities. Long-distance buses reach Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 2 from Bangkok and Chiang Mai. There is no railway station in Chiang Rai; the usual overland approach from Chiang Mai follows Highway 118.

Getting around

Songthaews, tuk-tuks and metered or app-booked taxis cover Chiang Rai city. A hired car with a driver is practical for Doi Tung, Mae Sai, Chiang Saen and the Golden Triangle. Phu Chi Fa requires a road transfer, and local transport becomes limited after dark outside the city.

Who it suits

  • Temple and design travellers Wat Rong Khun, Baan Dam and Wat Rong Suea Ten present three distinct contemporary Thai artistic visions.
  • Mountain and landscape travellers Doi Tung, tea country and Phu Chi Fa combine highland roads with Mekong-basin views.
  • Travellers interested in border history Chiang Saen and the Golden Triangle reveal centuries of Mekong trade and shifting frontiers.
  • Food-focused travellers Northern Thai sausages, khao soi and Yunnanese dishes reflect Lanna and Chinese migration routes.
