Understand Phuket
Phuket’s character comes from its position between India, the Malay Peninsula and China. Tin drew merchants and labourers; tourism later reshaped the coast without erasing the island’s shrines, shophouses and southern Thai kitchens.
Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
Known to European traders as Junk Ceylon by the 16th century, Phuket sat beside shipping routes linking India, Malacca and China. Tin deposits brought Malay, Chinese and European interests, while the 1785 defence of Thalang established a local story of resistance led by sisters Chan and Mook.
Chapter 02 · PEOPLE
Chinese migration expanded during Phuket’s 19th-century tin boom, producing Baba Peranakan families whose customs blended southern Chinese and Thai practices. Phuket Old Town still centres community life around shrines such as Jui Tui, while the annual Vegetarian Festival reflects traditions associated with Chinese opera workers in 1825.
Chapter 03 · FOOD
Phuket’s food links Andaman seafood with Hokkien migration and southern Thailand’s spice-heavy cooking. Mee Hokkien recalls 19th-century Chinese mining communities, moo hong uses soy and slow braising, and fish curries draw on coastal catches. This distinct culinary history helped Phuket become a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015.
Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE
Phuket Old Town’s arcaded shophouses and courtyard mansions followed the wealth of the late-19th and early-20th-century tin economy. Chinese merchants adopted European façades circulating through Penang and Singapore, creating the local Sino-Portuguese label. Chinpracha House, built in 1903, preserves patterned tiles, shuttered windows and an internal light well.
Chapter 05 · NATURE
Phuket covers roughly 543 square kilometres, with forested hills dividing western beaches from Phuket Town’s eastern lowlands. Seasonal monsoon winds reshape swimming conditions, while Sirinat National Park protects coastal forest and nesting habitat near Nai Yang and Mai Khao. Promthep Cape marks the island’s prominent southern headland.

Phuket International Airport receives direct flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi and major Gulf hubs. Road arrivals cross Sarasin Bridge from Phang Nga. Phuket has no railway; Surat Thani is the nearest major railhead, followed by a road transfer. Ferries and speedboats connect Rassada Pier with Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands.
Phuket Smart Bus links the airport with western beaches, while the Airport Bus serves Phuket Town. Blue songthaews radiate from Phuket Town but rarely connect beaches directly. Grab, Bolt and metered taxis operate, though fares exceed Bangkok’s. A hired car suits scattered beaches and viewpoints; scooters require an appropriate licence, helmet and confident traffic skills.
