Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

From caves to provincial capital

Khao Khanab Nam’s caves preserve evidence of prehistoric settlement beside the Krabi River. Centuries of Andaman trade later tied this coast to Malay ports and Nakhon Si Thammarat. In 1875, Krabi came under direct Bangkok administration during King Chulalongkorn’s centralising reforms, fixing Krabi Town as the mainland gateway to islands and river communities.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Communities shaped by coast and trade

Thai Buddhist communities dominate many mainland districts, while Muslim fishing villages such as Ko Klang reflect centuries of trade across the Andaman Sea. On Ko Lanta, the Urak Lawoi maintain a distinct maritime identity alongside Thai Chinese and Malay Muslim families. These communities explain Krabi’s mosques, temples, boatbuilding traditions and strong dependence on fishing and seasonal seas.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Southern heat from land and sea

Krabi’s cooking follows its geography: Andaman prawns, squid and fish meet Southern Thai curries heavy with turmeric, coconut and fresh herbs. Muslim communities around Ko Klang contribute roti and halal rice dishes, while Chinese migration shaped Krabi Town’s noodle shops. Maharaj Market brings these influences together each morning through seafood, curry pastes and tropical produce.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Temples, shophouses and cliff sanctuaries

Krabi’s buildings follow successive centres of power rather than one monumental style. King Rama V-era administration encouraged Krabi Town’s civic core and Sino-Thai shophouses, while Buddhist patronage produced Wat Kaew Korawaram. Wat Tham Suea later placed shrines among limestone caves and a mountaintop Buddha, linking Theravada practice directly to Krabi’s dramatic karst terrain.

Fact Wat Tham Suea was founded in 1975 by the monk Ajahn Jumnien Silsetso.

Chapter 05 · NATURE

A province carved from limestone

Krabi’s towers began as marine limestone roughly 250 million years ago, then erosion separated cliffs, caves and islands. Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, established in 1983, protects reefs, beaches and karst formations. Inland, Khao Phanom Bencha rises to 1,397 metres, feeding forests and waterfalls far removed from the resort coast.

Getting there and how long to stay

Krabi International Airport serves domestic and regional flights, with taxis, vans and buses continuing to Krabi Town, Ao Nang and nearby beaches. Krabi has no railway station; Surat Thani is the nearest major rail connection. Ferries and speedboats link Krabi with Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta and Phuket, although schedules change during the monsoon.

Getting around

Shared songthaews connect Krabi Town, Ao Nang and nearby beaches; Grab operates in developed areas, while local taxis usually require an agreed fare. Long-tail boats run between Ao Nang and Railay, and ferries serve Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi. A hired car helps around Tubkaek and inland Krabi, but parking and narrow roads make scooters unsuitable for inexperienced riders.
