Understand Marina Bay
Marina Bay grew from a working harbour into Singapore’s ceremonial centre through land reclamation, reservoir engineering and state-led development, while preserving sightlines to the 1928 Fullerton Building.
Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
Marina Bay’s present shoreline began taking shape through reclamation from 1969. After Singapore became independent in 1965, planners extended the city southward, creating Marina Centre and Marina South. Marina Barrage closed the bay in 2008, turning tidal water into Marina Reservoir and completing the shift from harbour edge to civic waterfront.
Chapter 02 · PEOPLE
The waterfront’s public role grew around the Merlion, installed at the Singapore River mouth in 1972 and moved to Merlion Park in 2002. Jubilee Bridge, opened in 2015, strengthened the pedestrian link to Esplanade. Together, these spaces turn reclaimed land into a gathering ground for National Day celebrations, concerts and nightly skyline walks.
Chapter 03 · FOOD
Singapore’s port drew Malay, Chinese, Indian and European communities, shaping dishes such as satay, laksa and roti prata. At Makansutra Gluttons Bay, opened beside Esplanade in 2005, hawker cooking reaches the waterfront. Satay by the Bay continues that link near Gardens by the Bay, where grilled skewers recall regional maritime trade.
Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE
The 1928 Fullerton Building represented British colonial administration as the General Post Office. Independent Singapore later used the same waterfront for state-directed landmarks: Esplanade opened in 2002, while Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands followed in 2010. Their scale reflects the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s plan to move the city centre around a public bay.
Chapter 05 · NATURE
Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012 on reclaimed Marina South land, extending Singapore’s garden-city policy into the new downtown. The Cloud Forest cools a planted mountain beneath glass, while 18 Supertrees carry vertical gardens. Nearby Marina Reservoir provides flood control, water storage and space for kayaking within the dense central district.

Plan

Changi Airport connects to Marina Bay by the East West and Downtown MRT lines, usually with a transfer. Taxis and Grab use the Marina Coastal Expressway or East Coast Parkway. Bayfront, Downtown, Marina Bay, Promenade, Esplanade and Raffles Place stations serve different sides of the waterfront.
Walking is practical using the Helix Bridge, Jubilee Bridge and continuous waterfront promenades. Bayfront MRT serves Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay; Promenade serves Suntec City; Esplanade serves the theatres. Taxis and Grab help in heavy rain, while Singapore River cruises cross the bay and continue toward Clarke Quay.
