Understand Sentosa
Known until 1972 as Pulau Blakang Mati, Sentosa still reveals its earlier lives through Fort Siloso, coastal gun positions and restored colonial buildings.
Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
Pulau Blakang Mati guarded the western entrance to Keppel Harbour before Britain built Fort Siloso in 1878. After military use declined, Singapore renamed the island Sentosa in 1972 and reshaped it for recreation, linking colonial defences with beaches, hotels and attractions.
Chapter 02 · PEOPLE
Malay kampongs occupied Pulau Blakang Mati before redevelopment accelerated in the 1970s. British troops, Japanese forces and prisoners of war also shaped the island’s memory. Today, Sentosa’s workforce and visitors reflect Singapore’s multilingual population, with English commonly connecting Mandarin, Malay and Tamil speakers.
Chapter 03 · FOOD
Sentosa has no separate island cuisine; its menus follow Singapore’s trading-port history. Chinese noodles, Malay satay, Indian curries and Peranakan laksa reflect communities connected through Singapore Harbour. Resorts World Sentosa and Quayside Isle add international restaurants, while beach venues concentrate around Siloso and Tanjong.
Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE
Sentosa’s buildings follow shifts in power and purpose. Britain’s Fort Siloso used earthworks and coastal artillery from 1878, while Capella Singapore incorporates restored Tanah Merah military buildings with a 2009 Foster + Partners extension. Resorts World Sentosa represents the island’s later turn toward large-scale leisure architecture.
Chapter 05 · NATURE
Sentosa covers roughly 500 hectares beside Singapore’s southern shipping lanes. Secondary rainforest survives around Mount Imbiah, while Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong form the island’s three principal beaches. At Tanjong Rimau, rocky shore and intertidal habitats reveal a less engineered coastline during authorised low-tide programmes.
Turning points
British coastal guns protected the western approach to Keppel Harbour.
Fort Siloso became a prisoner-of-war camp after Singapore surrendered.
Pulau Blakang Mati was renamed and placed under dedicated development management.
The Mount Faber line created an aerial connection with Sentosa.
Sentosa Gateway provided direct road access from mainland Singapore.
Universal Studios Singapore and integrated-resort facilities transformed the island’s eastern end.

Marina restaurants serve Singapore’s crab in a sweet, savoury and mildly spicy tomato-based sauce.
This noodle soup combines coconut broth, chilli, seafood and regional Peranakan influences.
Poached chicken, seasoned rice, chilli sauce and ginger make this a practical meal between beach activities.
Coconut rice typically arrives with sambal, egg, peanuts, anchovies and a choice of protein.
Toast spread with coconut-egg jam is commonly paired with soft-boiled eggs and kopi.
Charcoal-grilled skewers are served with peanut sauce, cucumber and compressed rice cakes.

From Singapore Changi Airport, take the MRT or a taxi to HarbourFront and VivoCity. The Sentosa Express departs VivoCity for Resorts World and the beaches. Pedestrians can use the Sentosa Boardwalk, while the Singapore Cable Car links Mount Faber and HarbourFront with Sentosa. Cars and taxis enter through Sentosa Gateway.
The Sentosa Express links Resorts World, Imbiah and the beach zone. Free Sentosa buses and the Beach Shuttle cover Fort Siloso, Siloso Beach, Palawan Beach and Tanjong Beach. Walking suits nearby stops, while the Singapore Cable Car provides a scenic but separately ticketed connection between Imbiah Lookout and Siloso Point.
