Orchard Road began among 19th-century fruit, pepper and nutmeg estates. Tanglin’s military barracks followed in 1860; department stores, hotels and restaurants later turned the district into Singapore’s principal shopping and dining corridor.

Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

From orchards to barracks

Orchard Road crossed 19th-century nutmeg, pepper and fruit estates before commercial development reached the area. In 1860, the British established Tanglin Barracks nearby, creating the military compound later known as Dempsey Hill. Those two origins explain the district’s name, broad road and unusually low barrack buildings.

Fact Orchard Road was named for the plantations and fruit orchards lining the route during the 1800s.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Planters, soldiers and shoppers

Teochew plantation owners, British soldiers and local workers shaped the district before retailers arrived. C.K. Tang opened his Orchard Road store in 1958, helping recast the road as Singapore’s shopping centre. Today Lucky Plaza remains an important Sunday meeting place for Singapore’s Filipino community.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Trade routes on the table

Singapore’s port brought Chinese, Malay, Indian and European ingredients together, while 19th-century nutmeg estates linked Orchard Road directly to colonial commodity trade. Dempsey Hill’s military kitchens are gone, but its barracks now house restaurants serving Peranakan, European and contemporary Singaporean cooking.

Fact Candlenut, now at COMO Dempsey, became the first Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant in 2016.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Barracks, shophouses and glass towers

British military authority produced Tanglin Barracks and St George’s Church, while early 20th-century merchants built Emerald Hill’s ornamented shophouses. Post-independence growth replaced many villas with malls and hotels; ION Orchard, completed in 2009, represents the road’s later shift toward high-density retail architecture.

Fact St George’s Church was completed in 1910 for the British military community at Tanglin Barracks.

A garden beside the city

The Singapore Botanic Gardens, founded in 1859 beside Tanglin, helped replace failed nutmeg cultivation with scientific planting and later supported Southeast Asia’s rubber industry. Its mature landscape also explains why Tanglin and Dempsey Hill retain more tree cover than Orchard Road’s central retail blocks.

Fact The Singapore Botanic Gardens became Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

Getting there and how long to stay

From Changi Airport, taxis and private-hire cars reach Orchard Road in about 25–35 minutes outside peak traffic. MRT services require transfers at Tanah Merah and City Hall for Orchard, Somerset or Dhoby Ghaut. Dempsey Hill has no MRT station; continue by taxi, private-hire car or bus from Orchard Road, Tanglin or Botanic Gardens.

Getting around

Orchard, Orchard Boulevard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut MRT stations cover the shopping corridor. Covered walkways connect many malls, although blocks are long. Buses serve Tanglin Road and Holland Road; taxis or Grab are simplest for Dempsey Hill, where restaurants and galleries spread across former barracks compounds.
