A year-round destination with regional seasons

South Africa works from January to December because regions peak at different times. Published climate normals range from 32C in January to 16C in June, with rainfall from 7mm in August to 49mm in February. Cape Town has wetter winters, while Kruger’s drier winter improves wildlife viewing; summer favours warm coasts and greener inland scenery.

Where to Go

Six regions reveal distinct journeys: Atlantic Cape scenery, Garden Route forests, Gauteng cities, Kruger wildlife, KwaZulu-Natal heritage and the Panorama Route’s high escarpment.

South Africa’s story runs from Sterkfontein’s early hominins through colonial rule and apartheid to the constitutional democracy shaped by Nelson Mandela in 1994.

South Africa FAQs

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

Travel is rewarding from January to December. May to September suits drier safari viewing; warmer months favour Cape beaches and coastal drives.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa?

Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders generally require approval before departure. Check DHA eVisa eligibility and current VFS instructions before applying.

Is South Africa safe for travellers?

Established tourist routes are widely visited, but theft and car crime occur. Use arranged transfers, avoid isolated areas after dark and follow local advice.

Which languages are useful?

English works well across tourism. Afrikaans, isiZulu and isiXhosa are commonly heard, alongside South Africa’s other official languages.

Is malaria prevention needed?

Malaria risk exists in Kruger, northeastern Mpumalanga and parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal. Seek medical advice about tablets and mosquito precautions.

Can visitors drive between regions?

Yes. Driving is on the left. Major routes are generally good, but avoid long rural drives after dark and monitor fuel levels.
