Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
From Natal to KwaZulu-Natal
Vasco da Gama named the coast Natal on Christmas Day 1497. Shaka consolidated the Zulu kingdom from about 1816, while Britain annexed Natal in 1843. Democratic restructuring in 1994 joined the former Natal province and KwaZulu homeland, creating KwaZulu-Natal and placing Zulu political history within a modern provincial boundary.
