Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
Gold, government and two cities
Pretoria was founded in 1855 and named after Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius. Johannesburg followed after gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1886. Mining capital rapidly produced railways, migrant compounds and dense commercial streets, while Pretoria developed as an administrative centre and later became the executive capital of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
