Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
A capital formed between rivers
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal founded Punakha Dzong in 1637 where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu meet. The fortress became the administrative and religious centre of his unified Bhutan, while the surrounding warm valley supplied rice. Punakha remained the national capital until 1955, explaining why royal and monastic ceremonies still return here.
