From fortified valley to capital
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal built Simtokha Dzong in 1629 to control routes through western Bhutan. Thimphu remained a modest valley settlement until King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck made it the permanent capital in 1961, shifting political gravity from Punakha and accelerating road building, administration and urban growth.
