Ha Long’s story begins in tropical seas, continues through Stone Age cave settlements and coal-era Hòn Gai, and now unfolds among UNESCO-protected limestone towers, fishing communities and overnight cruise routes.

Chapter 01 · ORIGIN

A seascape shaped from ancient limestone

Ha Long Bay began as carbonate sediment in tropical seas hundreds of millions of years ago. Tectonic uplift exposed the limestone, while rain dissolved fractures into towers, sinkholes and caves. Rising seas after the last Ice Age flooded the valleys, leaving the drowned karst landscape now protected within the Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO property.

Fact UNESCO first inscribed Ha Long Bay in 1994 for scenery and added geological criteria in 2000.

Chapter 02 · PEOPLE

Communities between caves, coal and water

Archaeological evidence links the bay to the Soi Nhụ culture from roughly 18,000 years ago and the later Cái Bèo culture. Fishing households subsequently built floating settlements such as Cửa Vạn. Onshore, French-controlled coal extraction transformed Hòn Gai after 1888, connecting Quảng Ninh’s harbour communities to industrial and maritime networks.

Fact Cửa Vạn developed within a sheltered channel and became one of Ha Long Bay’s best-known floating fishing communities.

Chapter 03 · FOOD

Seafood shaped by the Gulf of Tonkin

The Gulf of Tonkin supplies squid, prawns, clams and fish, while Vân Đồn’s trading history, documented from 1149, connected Quảng Ninh with regional maritime commerce. Ha Long’s signature chả mực uses hand-pounded squid fried into savoury cakes, commonly served with sticky rice or bánh cuốn rather than elaborate sauces.

Fact Chả mực Hạ Long is traditionally pounded by hand to preserve the squid’s uneven, springy texture.

Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE

Floating homes and a changing harbour city

Ha Long’s built landscape reflects successive economies rather than one royal dynasty. Cửa Vạn’s floating houses answered the practical needs of fishing families, while Hòn Gai acquired mines and port infrastructure under French control after 1888. The black-glass Quảng Ninh Museum, designed by Salvador Pérez Arroyo and opened in 2013, signals the province’s shift toward culture and tourism.

Chapter 05 · NATURE

Karst towers, caves and tidal habitats

Ha Long Bay contains roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets rising from the Gulf of Tonkin. Dissolution created caves such as Sung Sot, while sheltered channels support mangroves, tidal flats and marine life. The 2023 UNESCO extension joined Ha Long Bay with the Cat Ba Archipelago, protecting a broader connected karst ecosystem.

Getting there and how long to stay

Most travellers drive from Hanoi or Nội Bài International Airport via the Hanoi–Ha Long Expressway. Vân Đồn International Airport and Cát Bi International Airport are closer alternatives with limited routes. Cruises usually depart from Tuan Chau International Passenger Port or Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay.

Getting around

Cruise boats, tenders and kayaks provide access across the bay. Grab and metered taxis operate around Bai Chay, Hòn Gai and Tuan Chau, while electric buggies cover parts of the resort districts. A private car is useful for Quảng Ninh Museum or Yên Tử, but unnecessary during a cruise.
