Understand Hue
Huế became Vietnam’s capital under Gia Long in 1802. Its citadel, royal tombs, Buddhist pagodas and court cooking still explain how the Nguyễn dynasty shaped central Vietnam.
Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
In 1306, Champa ceded Ô and Lý to Đại Việt after King Chế Mân married Princess Huyền Trân. Nguyễn Hoàng arrived in Thuận Hóa in 1558, and his successors turned Phú Xuân into their power base. When Gia Long unified Vietnam in 1802, Huế became the Nguyễn imperial capital.
Chapter 02 · PEOPLE
Huế’s court identity survived the Nguyễn dynasty’s 1945 end through crafts, ancestor worship and Buddhist institutions. Artisans make conical hats in Tây Hồ and incense in Thủy Xuân, while Thiên Mụ Pagoda anchors religious life beside the Perfume River. The city’s measured rhythm reflects both formal court culture and repeated wartime loss.
Chapter 03 · FOOD
Huế cooking joins Nguyễn court precision with ingredients from the Perfume River, Cồn Hến and Tam Giang–Cầu Hai Lagoon. Imperial demand encouraged numerous small, carefully presented dishes; Buddhist communities strengthened vegetarian cooking. Bún bò Huế brings lemongrass and fermented shrimp paste together, while bánh bèo, bánh khoái and cơm hến reflect rice farming, fishing and local trade.
Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE
Gia Long’s 1805 Citadel positioned Ngự Bình Mountain as a protective screen and the Perfume River as its ceremonial foreground. Later Nguyễn rulers built tomb complexes reflecting their reigns: Minh Mạng favoured symmetry, Tự Đức created a contemplative retreat, and Khải Định adopted concrete, European forms and ceramic mosaics under French colonial influence.
Chapter 05 · NATURE
The Perfume River formed Huế’s transport corridor, ceremonial axis and garden landscape long before modern roads. Eastward, Tam Giang–Cầu Hai Lagoon supports fishing communities and brackish ecosystems. South of the city, Bạch Mã rises to about 1,450 metres, where monsoon forests, waterfalls and cooler air contrast sharply with Huế’s summer heat.
Turning points
Chế Mân transferred two territories after marrying Đại Việt princess Huyền Trân.
Nguyễn Hoàng took charge of Thuận Hóa, founding the southern Nguyễn power base.
Nguyễn Phúc Khoát established Phú Xuân as the Nguyễn lords’ capital.
Gia Long unified Vietnam and made Huế the Nguyễn dynasty capital.
French forces captured the Citadel after the Nguyễn court’s failed counterattack.
Emperor Bảo Đại abdicated at Ngọ Môn, ending Nguyễn dynastic rule.
UNESCO inscribed the Complex of Huế Monuments as World Heritage.

Zen master Nhat Dinh founded this forest monastery in 1843; monk Thich Nhat Hanh later maintained close ties here.

A lemongrass-scented beef and pork noodle soup traditionally sharpened with fermented shrimp paste and chilli.
Rice, tiny clams, herbs, peanuts and crisp pork skin are mixed with a hot clam broth.
This crisp turmeric pancake encloses shrimp and pork and comes with a thick peanut-sesame sauce.
Small steamed rice cakes carry shrimp powder, scallion oil and crisp pork skin.
A thick tapioca-and-rice noodle soup is served with crab, shrimp and a brick-red broth.
Chewy tapioca dumplings conceal roast pork, pairing savoury filling with sweet ginger syrup.

Phú Bài International Airport is Huế’s nearest airport, with road transfers into the city. Đà Nẵng International Airport offers more connections via the Hải Vân Tunnel. Reunification Express trains stop at Huế Railway Station on the Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City line, while Highway 1 links Huế with Đà Nẵng and Quảng Trị.
Central Huế is manageable by bicycle, cyclo, Grab, Xanh SM and metered Mai Linh taxis. Dragon boats travel the Perfume River toward Thiên Mụ Pagoda. Royal tombs are spread south of the centre, so a hired car or guided motorbike route is more efficient than cycling between all three.
