Understand Hanoi
Founded as Thang Long in 1010, Hanoi still reveals its past street by street: dynastic gates, colonial boulevards, wartime sites and neighbourhoods organised around traditional trades.
Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
In 1010, Ly Thai To moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La and renamed it Thang Long, meaning Ascending Dragon. The city developed beside the Red River, where waterways supported rice, trade and defence. Emperor Minh Mang created Hanoi province in 1831, giving the modern city its enduring name.
Chapter 02 · PEOPLE
Hanoi’s civic identity gathers around Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on 2 September 1945. Earlier scholar-officials studied Confucian texts at the Imperial Academy, founded in 1076. Today, family businesses, university communities and pavement vendors keep neighbourhood life closely tied to streets, lakes and communal houses.
Chapter 03 · FOOD
Red River Delta rice, freshwater fish and market herbs shaped Hanoi’s restrained, savoury cooking. Pho became closely associated with the capital during the early 20th century, while bun cha pairs charcoal-grilled pork with noodles and nuoc cham. French rule introduced baguettes and coffee; Nguyen Van Giang created Hanoi’s egg coffee in 1946 when milk was scarce.
Chapter 04 · ARCHITECTURE
Ly, Tran and Le rulers expanded the Thang Long citadel around palaces, gates and ceremonial courts. France made Hanoi the capital of French Indochina in 1902, adding boulevards, villas and buildings such as the Opera House. After 1954, socialist monuments and state institutions reshaped Ba Dinh, producing Hanoi’s distinctive overlap of imperial, colonial and revolutionary architecture.
Chapter 05 · NATURE
The Red River has fed, connected and flooded Hanoi for centuries, encouraging settlement behind dikes and around lakes. Hoan Kiem Lake anchors the historic centre, while West Lake occupies an old channel of the Red River. Beyond the core, Ba Vi National Park protects forested slopes rising around Tan Vien Mountain within greater Hanoi.

Noi Bai International Airport receives domestic and international flights about 30 kilometres north of central Hanoi. Airport buses 86 and 68 connect key districts, while licensed taxis and Grab serve hotels directly. Hanoi Railway Station links the capital with Lao Cai, Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City; long-distance buses use terminals including My Dinh, Gia Lam and Giap Bat.
Hoan Kiem and the Old Quarter are easiest on foot, though pavements can be crowded. Grab cars and motorbikes are widely used, metered taxis suit groups, and public buses cover outer districts. Hanoi Metro Line 2A links Cat Linh with Ha Dong; Line 3 connects Nhon with Cau Giay and central sections as operating phases permit.
