Chapter 01 · ORIGIN
From Prey Nokor to Saigon
The Khmer settlement of Prey Nokor preceded Vietnamese expansion southward. In 1698, administrator Nguyen Huu Canh established Gia Dinh, tying the settlement to the Nguyen lords. French forces captured Saigon in 1859, turning its river port into colonial Cochinchina’s commercial centre. The city became Ho Chi Minh City in 1976, though Saigon remains common in everyday speech.
